A century of U-girders in 67 days

Kanpur Metro team takes rapid strides along the 9-km Priority Corridor between IIT-Kanpur and Motijheel

Afcons’ Kanpur Metro team is blazing through their activities along the Priority Corridor. It took them merely 67 days to erect 100 U-Girders since August 2020. Afcons is executing the 9-km stretch from IIT-Kanpur to Motijheel for Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC).

Since this is a critical section of the project, the team stepped on gas right from the word go. “The momentum for the project was set right in the beginning. We set up the casting yard within a record 60 days even though there was a 33-day delay in getting the land. We completed the casting of the first U-girder in January 2020, and there’s no stopping since,” said Project Manager Sanjay Singh.

The first U-girder was erected during a ceremony in August 2020 and the 100th was hoisted in October. Of the 638 U-girders, around 212 have already been cast. The team has already completed 1,972 piles, which is 90% of the total piling activity.

Precast double T-girder beams have been implemented for the first time in this project to save time due to exigency of the work; the first of which was erected in July. So far, 100 of these have been erected and the base of the concourse of IIT and Kalyanpur Metro stations has been laid. Remarkably, all activities have been carried out without affecting live traffic.

Noteworthy progress was also made when the team achieved the highest level of optimisation by casting 54 U-girders in the month of October, highest theoretical limit for casting of U-Girders in 18 beds.

According to Singh, the team draws inspiration from the challenges this year has brought. As with most of Afcons’ projects, the workforce was provided a haven with all necessary amenities during the nationwide lockdown following the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus. When activities resumed, the site team ensured all precautions were in place to provide them a safe and healthy work environment.

“We ensured our people were provided the moral support and a secure work environment through the past months. The tough times made us realign our priorities and we have been able to make the most of the hard times and deliver exemplary results. In July, when the entire country was struggling with procuring manpower, we were able to achieve highest turnover for the month for our BU. The numbers have only got better progressively. Our team has broken own record third consecutive month by attaining BOQ of Rs50.90 crore during the festive month. This is new turnover record for elevated Metro for our company. We are hopeful of carrying on our good work and setting more milestones in months to come,” Singh signed off.
