Project Manager, Pradip Port Coal Handling Project. Date : Feb. 2000

M/s. AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd., Mumbai was awarded Package 030, Construction of Wharf, for the ADB Assisted “Coal Port Project”, for creation of mechanized coal handling facilities at Paradip Port in Orissa. AFCONS commenced work in January 1997. The package involved construction of an offshore wharf suitable for berthing two ships up to 90,000 DWT, 520 meter long and 20.5 meters wide with approach bridges. The structure is founded on one meet diameter driven steel piles of average length 30 meters, with precast deck beams connected by insitu concrete supporting a deck cast insitu  on precast planks. The work  included all fabrication and construction, dynamic and static load testing, as well as installation of cathodic protection system, bollards, fenders, structural walkways and crane rails, at a total contract cost of 651.4 million Rupees.

It gives me great pleasure to note that AFCONS has carried out the work in a thorough, professional, diligent and expeditious manner such that Paradip Port now possesses a world class wharf which withstood the recent Super Cyclone in Paradip.

AFCONS maintained excellent safety standards, completing the work with no fatalities, and an LTIFR of 1.43. The period from 28 January 1998 to completion on 28 December 1999 was comleted without any lost time accidents, having worked 1,727,000 man hours in that period.

I congratulate AFCONS and Mr. B .K. Arora. Project Manager and his team of Engineers and workers for their outstanding achievements, and I wish them every success in their future endeavours.
